All of our Irish sweaters are knit using the traditional Aran Stitches and each Aran sweater design has a meaning behind it and is linked to life on the Aran islands. There are many stitches that make up Aran sweaters. These stitches have been passed down through the years from generation to generation with each stitch having a symbol and meaning.
We at Arancrafts are very proud to continue the tradition of our family business and bring high quality traditional Aran garments to our customers.
The Cable stitch symbolises fisherman’s ropes and represents a wish for safety and good luck for a fruitful day at sea. An Integral part of the Fisherman’s daily life.
The ZigZag stitch represents the ups and downs of love and married life, as well as the twisting cliff paths of the Aran islands.
The Trellis Stitch represents the landscape pattern, which were created by the stone walls which divided the small farms and land throughout the Aran island on the West Coast.
The Basket stitch represents the fisherman’s basket, bringing an omen of good luck which was a hope for catches abundant.
The Moss stitch is the symbol of nature all around us and a good harvest. It depicts Carrageen Moss commonly called Irish Moss which is a type of seaweed which can be found off the south and west coasts of Ireland and was used as a fertiliser for the fields in a hope to produce a good harvest.
The Honeycomb Stitch represents the hard-working honeybee and its sweet reward. Signifying the hard work of the fisherman out at sea and reward of a good catch.
The Diamond stitch represents the shape of the fisherman’s nets and is a wish of success, wealth, and treasure.
The Tree of Life Stitch can also be known as the Trinity stitch, which bestows a wish for a long and happy life and said to also represent the different cycles in one’s life.
